Best Indie Games on Steam Deck in 2026 (So Far)

The best indie games released in 2026 that play great on Steam Deck. From roguelike deckbuilders to survival climbers, these are the games worth downloading right now.

Slay the Spire 2 key art showing card combat with mystical characters

2026 is barely three months old and the Steam Deck already has one of the strongest indie lineups in its history. Slay the Spire 2 launched today with native Linux support and Deck verification from day one. Mewgenics was the most played game on Steam Deck for all of February. Cairn turns a mountain into the most beautiful handheld experience of the year.

This is our running list of the best indie games released in 2026 that run great on Steam Deck. Every game here launched this year, has full controller support, and is worth your time on the go. We will keep updating this list as new games release throughout the year.

Slay the Spire 2

Roguelike deckbuilder | Mega Crit | March 5, 2026 | $24.99

Slay the Spire 2 gameplay showing card combat on the Steam Deck

The sequel to the game that invented an entire genre. Slay the Spire 2 launched today in early access with five playable characters, 4-player online co-op, and over 400 cards. It is built on Godot with native Linux support, which means it runs flawlessly on Steam Deck without any compatibility layer.

This is the perfect handheld game. Runs take 30 to 60 minutes, you can pause and resume at any time, and the turn-based gameplay needs zero fast reflexes. Battery life is excellent thanks to the lightweight engine. If you own a Steam Deck and like card games, this is the most important launch of 2026.

Steam Deck status: Verified. Native Linux, full controller support, Steam Cloud saves.

Mewgenics

Tactical roguelite | Edmund McMillen & Tyler Glaiel | February 10, 2026 | $29.99

Mewgenics gameplay showing the cat breeding and tactical combat system

Edmund McMillen’s long-awaited cat breeding tactical game finally released in February and immediately became the most played game on Steam Deck for the entire month. You breed cats, build teams, and send them into turn-based adventures that get absurdly deep. It is The Binding of Isaac’s weird cousin, and it is brilliant.

Mewgenics sold over a million copies in its first week. The game is a natural fit for handheld play because each run offers bite-sized adventures you can pick up and put down. The art style is charming in that distinctly McMillen way.

Steam Deck status: Verified. Full controller support. The developers recommend touchscreen for some menus, but it plays well with just the controls.

Cairn

Survival climber | The Game Bakers | January 29, 2026 | $29.99

Cairn gameplay showing a climber scaling a massive open mountain

Cairn is a survival climbing game from the creators of Furi and Haven. You climb a massive open mountain with no set path, managing your stamina, gear, and body as you find your own route to the summit. It scored 87 on OpenCritic and moved over 200,000 copies in its launch weekend.

This is one of the most visually stunning games on Steam Deck right now. The slower pace suits handheld play perfectly. You can save anywhere, and sessions work well in short bursts or long climbs. Performance occasionally dips below 30 FPS on lowest settings when large portions of the mountain are visible, but the gameplay does not require high framerates.

Steam Deck status: Verified. Full controller support, save anywhere, Steam Cloud.

Read our Cairn review for the full breakdown.

Rotwood

Co-op action brawler | Klei Entertainment | March 3, 2026 | $19.99

Rotwood gameplay showing co-op combat in a dark forest environment

Klei Entertainment, the studio behind Don’t Starve and Oxygen Not Included, left early access with Rotwood on March 3. This is a co-op brawler set in a corrupted forest where you fight procedurally generated enemies, craft weapons, and push deeper into increasingly dangerous biomes. Up to 4 players online.

Rotwood is fast, punchy, and satisfying in short sessions. Each run into the forest takes 15 to 30 minutes. The hand-drawn art style runs smoothly on Deck, and the controller-first design means everything feels right on the sticks. Great for co-op sessions with friends who also have Decks.

Steam Deck status: Playable. Full controller support, online co-op works seamlessly.

Read our Rotwood review for the full verdict.

Omelet You Cook

Cooking roguelike | SchuBox Games | February 8, 2026 | $14.99

Omelet You Cook gameplay showing the conveyor belt cooking system

The cozy surprise hit of early 2026. Omelet You Cook has you assembling omelets for quirky students using ingredients from a conveyor belt. It sounds simple. It is not. Recipes get complex, upgrades stack in interesting ways, and the roguelike progression keeps each shift feeling fresh.

This is the ideal Steam Deck game for when you want something lighter. Sessions are short, the controls are simple, and the cheerful art style looks great on the smaller screen. Pick it up for $14.99 and lose hours to it.

Steam Deck status: Playable. Full controller support, save anytime.

Crimson Capes

2D action adventure | Poor Locke | February 12, 2026 | $14.99

Crimson Capes gameplay showing pixel art swordplay and monster combat

A beautiful pixel art action game where you hunt witches, fight monsters, and explore the age of high adventure. Crimson Capes features fluid 2D swordplay that feels responsive and satisfying on the Deck’s controls. The hand-crafted pixel art pops on the OLED screen.

If you like games in the vein of classic Castlevania with modern combat sensibilities, this is worth a look. The lower price point makes it an easy impulse buy, and the lightweight 2D engine means excellent battery life.

Steam Deck status: Playable. Full controller support, online co-op available.

Coming Soon

These 2026 releases are not out yet but should be great on Steam Deck when they arrive.

Solasta II (March 12, 2026). The first major CRPG built on the updated D&D 5e ruleset. Turn-based tactical combat works perfectly on a handheld, and the original Solasta was a popular Deck game. Read our Solasta II preview for the full details.

Overthrown (March 18, 2026). Brimstone’s chaotic city builder for 1 to 6 players hits version 1.0 after a successful early access period. Physics-based kingdom management with co-op makes this a strong candidate for Deck handheld sessions.

Keep This List Bookmarked

We will update this list throughout 2026 as new games release and earn their spot. The Steam Deck library keeps growing, and 2026 is shaping up to be the strongest year yet for indie games on handheld.
