Slay the Spire 2 Heads to Early Access in March with Four Playable Characters
Mega Crit's sequel to the genre-defining deckbuilder launches on a secret Thursday in March 2026 with four characters and a rebuilt engine.
The sequel to the game that defined the deckbuilding roguelike genre is almost here. Mega Crit has confirmed that Slay the Spire 2 will enter Steam Early Access on a “secret Thursday” in March 2026, narrowing the launch to March 5, 12, 19, or 26.

What We Know
The original Slay the Spire essentially invented the deckbuilding roguelike genre when it launched in 2019. The sequel does not reinvent the formula. Instead, it deepens what made the first game compelling while introducing enough new systems to feel fresh.
Four playable characters will be available at launch. The Ironclad and The Silent return with completely overhauled powers, redesigned skills, and new animations. Two new characters join them: The Necrobinder, a lich who fights alongside a reanimated hand called Osty, and The Regent, whose details remain under wraps. The Defect and Watcher from the original are notably absent.
A new mechanic called Stars integrates across all characters. The game also introduces Alternate Acts, which randomly swap in different environments, enemies, events, and bosses once unlocked, adding massive replay variety. If you missed this month’s demos, Steam Next Fest is just around the corner with more roguelikes worth tracking.
New Engine, Same Spirit
Mega Crit has fully migrated from Unity to Godot, the free and open-source engine that has been gaining traction across the indie scene. The visual presentation has moved from 2D sprites to a 3D style that retains the original’s hand-drawn charm. If you are a developer curious about free engines for game development, Godot is the same engine behind games like Loan Shark and other recent indie hits.

The Roguelike Renaissance Continues
Slay the Spire 2 arrives during what many are calling a golden age for indie games. The roguelike genre in particular has seen explosive growth, with games like Balatro, Hades II, and dozens of others proving there is massive demand for well-crafted run-based games.

Early Access Details
The Early Access launch was originally planned for late 2025 but was pushed to March 2026 for additional polish. Mega Crit has outlined a roadmap that includes additional characters, events, and relics throughout the Early Access period. Pricing has not been announced yet.

Given the original’s track record of millions of copies sold and a community that is still active years later, Slay the Spire 2 is poised to be one of 2026’s biggest indie releases. Expect it to be a major talking point at the GDC 2026 indie showcase next month.
