Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth Brings Hyper Games Back to the Valley

The studio behind Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley returns with a cozy puzzle adventure starring Moomintroll himself. It launches today on Steam and Switch with a 15% discount.

Two years after Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley quietly became one of 2024’s most charming indie hits, Norwegian studio Hyper Games is back in Tove Jansson’s universe. Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth launches today on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2 with a 15% launch discount.

This time the wandering minstrel sits the journey out. Moomintroll wakes up alone in the middle of his hibernation, the valley he loves frozen solid, and has to figure out how to live in a world he barely recognizes.

A Sequel That Refuses to Repeat Itself

Snufkin was a melodic puzzler about restoring nature through music. Moomintroll’s adventure swaps that hook for something quieter and more grounded. You explore a frostbitten Moominvalley, solve environmental puzzles, and slowly build friendships with the few characters still awake during the long Nordic winter.

The art style carries over from Snufkin. It is the same hand-painted, storybook look that earned the first game an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating from over 1,700 Steam users (96% positive). The soundtrack leans into the same Tove Jansson musical heritage, with the recurring Moomin themes filtered through a colder, more contemplative palette.

What changes is the emotional shape. Snufkin was about freedom and movement. Moomintroll is about loneliness, learning to ask for help, and finding warmth where you do not expect it. Hyper Games has been clear that this is a meaningful step forward, not a remix of the first game.

What the Demo Already Told Us

A free demo went live during the Indie Live Expo period and pulled in 94% positive Steam reviews from 72 players. Press impressions tracked the same way. Six One Indie called the demo “wholesome” with “a magical quality to it.” CGMag wrote that the game “captured a feeling I can’t express in words.” The Indie Informer admitted they may end up liking the sequel more than the original.

The demo is still up on Steam if you want to test the vibe before buying. Cloud saves carry into the full game.

Where to Play

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is available now on Steam (Windows and macOS), Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The PC version supports full controller play and ships in 17 languages with full audio and interface localization, including French, Japanese, and both Chinese variants.

The launch discount runs through the first week and applies on every storefront. Hyper Games is co-publishing with Kakehashi Games, the Japanese label that has supported several Moomin-related releases for the Asian market. Snufkin was published by Raw Fury back in 2024, so this is a fresh publishing partnership for the studio.

Why This Matters Right Now

The cozy puzzle space has gotten crowded since 2024, but few studios manage to write characters with the warmth Hyper Games does. The Moomins are over 80 years old, and they survived this long because Tove Jansson built them around small, honest emotions rather than spectacle. Hyper Games clearly understands that.

If Snufkin was your gateway into this world, Moomintroll is the obvious next stop. If you missed Snufkin, this is also a perfectly fine place to start. The two games share a setting but tell completely separate stories.
