Everything is Crab launches today, and refusing to become one is the whole point

Odd Dreams Digital's evolutionary roguelite is out on Steam. 125+ mutations, a Spore-shaped run structure, and one absurd guiding question. Can you out-evolve carcinisation?

There is a real biology meme that says all crustaceans, given enough evolutionary time, eventually drift into a crab-shaped form. The phenomenon has a name. Carcinisation. Everything is Crab is built around that joke and asks the only question that matters. If the universe is constantly trying to turn every animal into a crab, can you cheat?

The game is out today on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Stove, with a 10% launch discount that puts it at $8.99. Malmö-based Odd Dreams Digital developed it, and Secret Mode is publishing. It is the studio’s debut, and it is Steam Deck Verified at launch, which is a small but real tell about the team’s attention to detail.

The trailer leans into the bit hard. You start as an amorphous blob in a forest, get chased by a fox, eat some bugs, and start sprouting parts. Claws. Scales. Antlers. The longer you survive, the further you can pull your creature away from the gravitational pull of crab-shape.

What it actually is

The pitch the studio uses is “Spore meets modern roguelites”, and that is a more accurate description than it has any right to be. You start each run as a basic organism. As you survive, you unlock evolutions drawn from a pool of more than 125 real-world inspired traits and specialisations. You stack them into your creature both mechanically and visually. The build for one run might be a four-legged horned thing with a flame breath. The next might be a serpentine glider with venomous bite. The runs end in a creature you have to look at and laugh.

Underneath the silly veneer is a structurally familiar action roguelite loop. You explore biomes, fight or flee predators, scavenge for food and resources, and either make a successful evolutionary leap or get Darwin’d, which is the studio’s word for the run-ending death state. Permanent meta progression unlocks new starting paths and evolution trees, so subsequent runs are not just retreads.

Why it might actually work

A lot of “build your guy” roguelites give you a flat menu of upgrades. Everything is Crab makes the upgrade itself the personality of the run. Your traits are your creature, and your creature is what shapes your strategy. A run with mud bath and scent marking is a defensive, social-stat run. A run with sharpened claws and increased mass is an aggressive predator run. The fact that the visual model also reshapes around your choices means every run looks different, not just plays different.

The other thing the trailer sells well is the bestiary. The animals you fight and avoid feel grounded enough that you read them as part of an ecosystem instead of a list of enemy archetypes. That is harder to nail than it looks, and it is what gives the carcinisation gag its weight. The world is full of creatures that already drifted into crab. You’re the rebel.

Where you can play it

Everything is Crab is out today, May 8, 2026, on:

  • Steam (Windows)
  • Epic Games Store
  • Stove

Pricing is $9.99 with a 10% launch discount down to $8.99. There’s also a free demo still available on Steam if you want to try the loop before paying. The game is single-player, supports full controller, and has adjustable difficulty plus a “Playable without Timed Input” accessibility flag that’s worth noting.

Why this matters this week

This has been a heavy launch week for indies. Mixtape brought Annapurna’s prestige narrative bet. MOTORSLICE and Wax Heads ran the music-and-vibes lane. Everything is Crab is the chaos pick of the week. It is funny on the surface, deeper than it looks once you start running it, and priced low enough to be an impulse buy.

If you live in the roguelite genre and you have ever thought “I want Spore but with a real run loop underneath”, this is a one-day buy. If you don’t, the demo is free and the joke is good.
