REPLACED Is Finally Here After Years of Delays and a Studio Uprooted by War

Sad Cat Studios started as three mobile developers in Belarus. Seven years later, their cyberpunk platformer REPLACED launched to strong reviews on Steam and Game Pass.

The most wishlisted indie game of the past two years is no longer a wishlist item. REPLACED launched on April 14 on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Xbox Series X|S. It is available on Game Pass from day one. The price is $19.99 if you are buying outright.

If you have been following this game since its reveal in 2021, you already know the pitch. If you have not, here is the short version: you play as R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence forced into a human body against its will. The setting is an alternate 1980s America ravaged by nuclear catastrophe, where a corporation called Phoenix trades human lives like currency. You run, climb, and fight through a crumbling city rendered in some of the most striking pixel art ever put in a video game.

The Backstory Behind the Studio

The development story is as compelling as the game itself. Sad Cat Studios was founded in 2018 by three people in Minsk, Belarus. Their only prior experience was in mobile games. Development on REPLACED started in 2018 with a simple goal: make a cinematic platformer in the spirit of Flashback and Another World.

The team originally planned a pure visual experience with no combat. When the budget would not allow for that, they added a free-flow combat system instead. What started as a compromise became one of the game’s defining features.

Then came the war. The Russo-Ukrainian conflict forced the studio to relocate from Belarus to Cyprus, disrupting production and pushing the release date back multiple times. A game first announced in 2021 with a 2022 window did not ship until April 2026. Four years of delays. But the team never abandoned the project.

The studio name, by the way, comes from a doodle. Co-founder Igor Gritsay drew a squished cat with a sad expression on social media. His co-founder Yura Zhdanovich thought it was hilarious. The name stuck.

What You Are Actually Playing

REPLACED is a narrative-driven 2.5D action platformer. The “2.5D” label matters here because the game blends hand-crafted pixel art with modern 3D lighting, volumetric effects, and real-time reflections. The result looks like nothing else on the market.

Combat uses a free-flow system. You chain attacks between enemies with a rhythm that critics have compared to the Batman Arkham games, but faster and more brutal. Platforming segments mix vertical climbing, environmental puzzles, and chase sequences. The game also has exploration sections where you walk through Phoenix City, talk to its residents, and uncover the conspiracy that drives the plot.

On Xbox Series X, the game runs at 4K 60 FPS. On Series S, it targets 2K 60 FPS. Sad Cat Studios issued a specific note for Series S users to expect some performance considerations at launch.

Early Reception

Reviews started landing on launch day and the consensus is positive. Critics consistently praise the art direction, atmosphere, and narrative. The story about an AI discovering what it means to be human in a world that has given up on humanity resonated with reviewers.

The criticism centers on pacing. Some reviewers found the combat repetitive in longer stretches, and others noted that platforming readability could be clearer. These are polish issues, not fundamental design problems.

The Steam page already has over 500 positive user reviews after one day.

How to Play It

Steam: $19.99 on the Steam store Xbox Game Pass: Included from day one on console and PC Also on: GOG, Epic Games Store

If you have Game Pass, there is zero reason not to try this. If you are buying on Steam, the $19.99 price point for the amount of production value on display here is generous.

REPLACED was one of our picks in the best indie games launching in April 2026 and was featured in the Triple-i Initiative showcase. After seven years of development and a studio that survived relocation during wartime, it is good to see this one finally reach players.
